This section of Compilations covers the albums Sound + Vision (1989) to Beat 600 (1999). Soundtracks and most of the albums containing Decca/Deram material are treated under Soundtracks and Early Works respectively, while several semi-official compilations are discussed under Pirates.
Sound + Vision (Rykodisc RCD 90120/21/22/RCDV-1018), September 1989 (US) I Space Oddity (Demo)/The Wild Eyed Boy From Freecloud (UK Single Version)/The Prettiest Star (Single Version)/London Bye Ta-Ta/Black Country Rock/The Man Who Sold The World/The Bewlay Brothers/Changes/Round And Round/Moonage Daydream/John I'm Only Dancing (Sax Version)/Drive-In Saturday/Panic In Detroit/Ziggy Stardust (Live1)/White Light-White Heat (Live1)/Rock 'N' Roll Suicide (Live1). Released in grammy-winning art box. Live tracks are from the regular albums (1 Ziggy Stardust - The Motion Picture, 2 David Live and 3 Stage) except the tracks on Sound + Vision Plus, which are from Boston, Music Hall, 01-10-72. A total of four editions has been released. The first edition has three audio CDs, a Video CD (Sound + Vision Plus) and a 72-page booklet. This edition also was available on 6 LPs or cassettes, in a similar art box. The second editionin a basswood and birch boxwas limited to 350 copies and came with a certificate of authenticity (signed by Bowie himself); it contains the same CDs as the first edition. The third edition, released in 1995, basically is identical to the first, but Sound + Vision Plus now comes on a CD-ROM (which additionally features a demo of the 'Jump' CD-ROM). The fourth edition (RYKO RCD 90130/31/32), from 1996, comes in a simple slipcase and drops the Sound + Vision Plus bonus CD. The entire set was reissued again in 2003, in a stylish 4CD box containing four inlay cards plus a poster. The tracklisting of this edition is updated and slightly modified: 1 Space Oddity (Demo)/The Wild Eyed Boy From Freecloud (Single Version)/The Prettiest Star (Single Version)/London Bye Ta-Ta (Stereo)/Black Country Rock/The Man Who Sold The World/The Bewlay Brothers/Changes/Round And Round (Alternate Mix)/Moonage Daydream/John I'm Only Dancing (Sax Version)/Drive-In Saturday/Panic In Detroit/Ziggy Stardust (Live1)/White Light-White Heat (Live1)/Rock 'N' Roll Suicide (Live1)/Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere/Sorrow/Don't Bring Me Down. 'The Wild-Eyed Boy From Freecloud' includes the spoken intro as on the Dutch 'Space Oddity' single, 'London Bye Ta-Ta' is a previously unreleased stereo mix, 'Round And Round' is labelled as an alternate vocal take (but in fact is a different mix with the same vocal), 4 Montreal, Forum, 13-07-83 (B-side 'Modern Love' single) and 5 Amsterdam, Paradiso, 10-06-97 (Tao Jones Index 12"). The 2003 edition was repacked yet again in 2014 (Parlophone DBSAVX 1), incorrectly listing 'The Prettiest Star' as the stereo version. |

The US edition (EMI/Capitol 72438-21320-2-8) (bottom) was released in a digipack with a different cover and highly incorrect liner notes. The word goes that for this particular reason it was withdrawn rather quickly. The Japanese edition (EMI M033647), with a cover identical to the UK issue, drops 'Suffragette City' but adds 'Lady Stardust' as a bonus track. |

Beat 600 - 60's & 70's Golden Nuggest Tracks (Espresso 565365-2), March 1999 (Italy) Ragazzo Solo, Ragazzo Sola. Actually this section is limited to Bowie-only albums, but for a long time this particular Italian compilation of 60s and 70s music was the only official CD featuring the Italian version of 'Space Oddity'. Unfortunately the track has been taken from an LP instead of the master tape... |
