Thanks beckenham. It's an excellent site. This, along with Nick Pegg's book, are brilliant reference points. I've been planning on collecting all the non-album stuff together as a playlist and CD compilation as I never get around to listening to most of this stuff as it's hidden away on singles and bonus discs etc.

hi graham,
i'm sure a lot of members here, if not all of us, have tried similar anthologies over the years. people tend to categorise differently so it's not always easy to do a quick compare and see what's "missing" from one collection or another.
one thing that would make your set differ from mine is the inclusion of unofficial downloads and bootleg tracks. however, examples like the german LYTT would have existed as "official" acetates so, if you owned them, they'd be game for inclusion in your own set. if they're from boot CDs then i'd not include them as it opens the door for ALL bootlegged tracks. ditto the EMI/RYKO tapes that surfaced. this stuff would all go on an unofficial set for me.
after that it's down to choice of edit, mastering, stereo vs mono etc. for example you include Ching A Ling but don't state which version... does it matter? if so, then you end up running to Anthology Vol.4 that collects different edits (you'll find half a dozen for Cat People alone) and other variations (Ragazzo Solo... was always in mono until the SO40 reissue, so do you go for higher fidelity over authenticity?, Sweet Head with or without the count-in, which mix of London Bye Ta-Ta?).
you also include collaborations which i've always separated. BUT when a collaboration is very "Bowie-heavy" like A Foggy Day In London Town or Planet Of Dreams, the temptation is to include it on the Bowie discs. the other side of this coin is Tin Machine tracks that don't have a Bowie lead vocal...collaborations?
another option is themed discs which i know some here have created. collecting all the soundtrack material on one disc, creating companion discs to the regular albums (a very good way to include all known edits and mixes of the same song IMO), and on it goes.
long post, it thought it best to cover the whole concept rather than reply to individual sets.

Your inclusion of 'Lieb' Dich Bis Dienstag' prompted a little research as I wasn't familiar with the songs performance in German

Hello Matt
'i'm sure a lot of members here, if not all of us, have tried similar anthologies over the years. people tend to categorise differently so it's not always easy to do a quick compare and see what's "missing" from one collection or another.'
I'd be interested to see others variations, for sure.
'one thing that would make your set differ from mine is the inclusion of unofficial downloads and bootleg tracks.'
I agree with you actually, so now I'm thinking I've missed something!
'however, examples like the german LYTT would have existed as "official" acetates so, if you owned them, they'd be game for inclusion in your own set. if they're from boot CDs then i'd not include them as it opens the door for ALL bootlegged tracks. ditto the EMI/RYKO tapes that surfaced. this stuff would all go on an unofficial set for me.'
I wanted to include all original songs officialy released or not for studio cuts only. The only thing that bothers me about that is the difference in sound quality when listening to parts of the compilation, so maybe you have a good point there.
'after that it's down to choice of edit, mastering, stereo vs mono etc. for example you include Ching A Ling but don't state which version... does it matter? if so, then you end up running to Anthology Vol.4 that collects different edits (you'll find half a dozen for Cat People alone) and other variations (Ragazzo Solo... was always in mono until the SO40 reissue, so do you go for higher fidelity over authenticity?, Sweet Head with or without the count-in, which mix of London Bye Ta-Ta?).'
I'm not interested in edits or different mixes. I've only tried to include re-recordings. I'd prefer the authentic cuts and the most complete. So Sweet Head would be the longer version. Ching A Ling the first recorded version.
'you also include collaborations which i've always separated. BUT when a collaboration is very "Bowie-heavy" like A Foggy Day In London Town or Planet Of Dreams, the temptation is to include it on the Bowie discs. the other side of this coin is Tin Machine tracks that don't have a Bowie lead vocal...collaborations?'
This was a simple choice to include everything as it's difficult to decide the cut off point for db's involvement for what to include or not.
'another option is themed discs which i know some here have created. collecting all the soundtrack material on one disc, creating companion discs to the regular albums (a very good way to include all known edits and mixes of the same song IMO), and on it goes.'
This is a good additional option to create proper bonus discs. The only problem with this for me is that the listening pleasure is spoilt by inclusion of another version of something you have just heard in the same sitting. Pesonal opinion I guess. The idea for me is creating a listenable selection and not just an archive of stuff that will sit around doing nothing. I've never ,for example, liked the CD singles like Little Wonder with numerous different mixes on.
'long post, it thought it best to cover the whole concept rather than reply to individual sets.'
thanks for the input

What a nice surprise to find this track on "The Superlatative David Bowie" which dropped through my letter box courtesy of Grow Music this AM, talk about coincidence...
